Getting Started

So you’ve decided you want to be a part of the REAL campaign. Now what?

The first step can seem intimidating, so it’s a good idea to start small. Look at the the things you buy regularly: food, clothing, gas, etc. Pick an item or two before you go shopping and do the research. In a matter of minutes you may be able to identify problem items you should avoid, or you may find they are OK. Either way, save your information, post it to the wiki, and send any applicable businesses an appropriate email.

Congratulations, you’ve just completed the RE in REAL.

If you do this regularly, perhaps once a week, you can gradually generate a list of goods that are guilt free. Before long, asking questions and checking labels will be a habit.

Once you’ve done a little research and engaging, advocacy and leadership are quite easy. Simply look at our advocacy resources and use them to contact your representatives. It only a takes a few minutes, and is entirely pain free.

To lead, tell a friend. Tell a family member. Post about us on facebook. Shoot off a tweet or two.

Some Important Tips

Try to do this with someone else. By teaming up, you can share information, and keep each other on track.

Be sure to keep a complete list of the things you’ve found to be OK as well as the ones that are troublesome. Both will be important.

Fit this into your schedule. This isn’t something that should be done spontaneously or whenever you remember. Doing it regularly will ensure that you do it consistently.

Use the wiki. The wiki is your friend. Post your information, and as others do the same, we can build an incredibly powerful resource.

Don’t get discouraged. If you can’t find an answer or a company doesn’t reply, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. The problem is big, but the solution is simple as long as we endure and remain focused and faithful.

Apple, Abuse, Ambivalence, And Alliteration.

Apple recently revealed that it has found numerous violations of the rights of workers, as well as child laborers at the factories of some of its suppliers. You can read more about it and get some interesting analysis here.

This news serves as a disturbing and hopeful reminder for us.

On the one hand, this demonstrates the scale of the problem we face. It isn’t just t-shirts and coffee beans that are produced by children working under indefensible conditions. iPhones and other consumer electronics evoke modern, even futuristic sensibilities, but they too can be tainted with barbaric injustices. We must be vigilant, and examine everything we buy, not just the ones that are historically associated with abuses.

On the other hand, this demonstrates quite clearly that these problems can be dealt with. Apple has internal policies which set important standards, and enforced them by inspecting facilities and keeping suppliers honest. Businesses that commit to fighting injustice have the power to make a tremendous difference.

And as the above article mentions, Apple is committed to transparency, and went so far as to publicly call itself out, in no small part because they know that their customers (that’s us) will not tolerate sweatshops or child labor. Our opinions and the potential for a backlash provide a powerful incentive for good behavior.

We can make a difference.

And so it begins…

Hello and welcome to the REAL campaign.

Starting today, March 1st, 2010, this site will serve as the command center in our fight against injustice. Be sure to check back often, as we will be constantly adding new resources and information to aid in the fight against oppression.

But perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s take it from the top.

The REAL Campaign is an antislavery initiative which seeks to empower ordinary people to fight monstrous injustices like forced labor, child labor, sex slavery, sweatshops, and conflict goods. To that end, we have devised a simple, four pronged approach:

  • Research – By researching the origins of the things we buy, we can cut out the goods that come at a human cost, and support ethical businesses.
  • Engage – By contacting the businesses who make products we will no longer buy, we ensure that they get the message.
  • Advocate – By contacting our representatives, we can make these issues a priority for those in power.
  • Lead – By spreading the word to our friends, families and colleagues, we can increase our effectiveness exponentially.

Each aspect of REAL attacks injustice on a different front, the combined effect of which is to reduce the benefits for perpetrators while greatly increasing the risks. The people, once united, have the power to wipe this ancient evil from the face of the earth. All they need is a rallying cry.

As of this posting, the finishing touches are still being applied, many resources are waiting to be posted, and the wiki is still getting set up. In the next few days, the polish and little details will be added. But for the time being, we may not be pretty, but we are more than ready pick a fight with injustice.

About me

I am Sentinel (AKA Joe) and I will be your guide on this epic journey. I founded this movement because of my passion for justice, a passion which springs from my faith in God. It seems like I can’t open a Bible without finding something about God’s passion for justice, and our call to defend those in need. Knowing that the millions of people who are living in chains are each a child of God, precious and beautiful, only strengthens my resolve.

Being a bit impatient and even a little cynical, I was unwilling to settle for lending passive support to those who are currently doing the heavy lifting, nor could I be content taking steps which did not directly lead to change, such as awareness building or token gestures and symbolic acts. I created REAL so that I could mobilize people to take significant action in their everyday lives.

A few other random details: I am a student studying political science, communications, philosophy, and more. I wear kilts whenever possible, try to make witty, absurd or sardonic remarks whenever I open my mouth, and make the world’s greatest brownies.
